Diversity, equity and inclusion have become increasingly important and contentious topics in the journalism industry. With the growing global awareness of issues like racial inequity and LGBTQIA+ rights, there has been increased pressure to address the lack of representation of marginalised communities in news stories and within European newsrooms.
At the News Impact Summit on diversity, equity and inclusion, we’ll look into lesser discussed facets of the issue like the impact of European colonialism on the media industry. We’ll also dissect the hidden prejudices that can affect the representation of migrants and refugees in newsrooms and their hiring practices.
We’ll speak with LGBTQIA+ journalists about media coverage of their communities and how new hiring strategies and editorial decisions could increase their representation. In the interactive Google workshop #IamRemarkable, participants will learn how to overcome cultural and gender modesty norms to celebrate their achievements in and out of the workplace. At the end of the Summit, journalism organisation Neue Deutsche Medien Macher:innen will present the highlights of their brand-new guide with practical steps and examples on how media companies can reach diversity.
