Experimenta Special Presentation: Piaffe
Sun 9 Oct 20:30 | Curzon Soho
A foley artist goes on a voyage of self-discovery while growing the tail of a horse, in this playful and sexy debut feature by artist Ann Oren.
Shy Eva (Simone Bucio) is forced to take a job creating sounds for a commercial advert in place of her sibling Zara (Oren’s regular collaborator and filmmaker Simon(e) Jaikiriuma Paetau), which means she has to deal with controlling producer Piotr (video artist Bjørn Melhus). As Eva struggles to create the requisite horse swishes and clip-clops, a mysterious tail starts to grow from her derriere. Her unforeseen extension empowers her and Eva embarks on an affair with the enigmatic botanist Novak (Sebastian Rudolph). Building on her visual art practice of performing fantasies, Oren and co-writer Thais Guisasola (The Whisper of the Jaguar) have produced a uniquely equine and contemporary heroine in Eva.
Embracing the magical, opulent visual style developed in her award-winning short film Passage (LFF 2020), Oren has produced a self-assured first feature. Sensually shot on super 16mm by cinematographer Carlos Vasquez, this strikingly original film explores otherness, manipulation and animalism in a surprisingly gentle carnal way.
Screening with short film “U Scantu”: A Disorderly Tale.
